Gross Product by Industry, 1977-88: A Progress Report on Improving the Estimates

This is the first article documenting the return of constant-dollar estimates by industry since their suspension in 1989. It was found that the revision to estimates had a minimal impact on final numbers, with growth rates for industries following the same general pattern. Changes to the methodology are also discussed.

This article presents revised current- and constant-dollar estimates for gross national product by industry for 1987 and 1980 along with new estimates for 1989. These estimates extend and update the estimates presented in the January 1991 Survey of Current Business article ‘Gross Product by Industry, 1977-88: A Progress Report on Improving the Estimates.’ The first part of the article discusses the changes and impact of the revisions, while the second part provides a summary of the impact on gross product originating by industry.
